This little duo of ditties were recorded on my iPhone 6 as part of the larger "Squid Kid" project. Both of these songs were actually voice memos that I captured without the intention of publishing them, but upon listening back to them I thought it would be a fun challenge to record on top of an imperfect recording.

"northern whales" is an improvisation on the piano in my parents home in Pennsylvania. You can hear the crickets chirping in the background, the squeak of the sustain pedal, and the creak of the wooden floor as I shifted in my seat. The sounds of home give me strength and this song is a way to carry those sounds with me as I travel far from home. I opened the back of the old upright piano, held down the sustain, and sang into the open strings, emulating whales and their echoing songs that can carry thousands of miles underwater to their lost loved ones.

"southern sharks" is about creative energy and need to keep moving forward just as a shark needs to keep swimming and eating to stay alive. Writers and sharks are both "built to spill." The original voice memo was recorded in my apartment in Chicago and I later layered the other pieces (vocals, guitar riffs, brushes) on top of the imperfect and tempo-changing track.
